Frequently asked questions
Straight answers about windscreen repairs, replacements, MOT rules and insurance. Can’t find what you need? Call or WhatsApp us.
Can my windscreen chip be repaired, or do I need a new windscreen?
Chips up to the size of a £1 coin can usually be repaired with resin, typically in around 20 minutes. Anything larger, or a chip that has spread into a crack, needs a new windscreen, and damage right in front of the driver or close to the edge of the screen may need one too. Send a photo with a £1 coin next to the damage on WhatsApp (07769 707501) and we’ll tell you which you need.
Will a chipped or cracked windscreen fail its MOT?
A chip or crack can fail the MOT if it’s bigger than 10mm in Zone A (a 290mm-wide strip centred on the steering wheel, within the area swept by the wipers) or bigger than 40mm elsewhere in the swept area, where it significantly affects the driver’s view of the road. These limits come from the MOT inspection manual on GOV.UK (section 3.2). Damage inside the limits can still spread, so it’s worth repairing early. See our cracked windscreen and MOT guide.
Can I claim for a new windscreen on my car insurance?
If your policy includes windscreen or glass cover, usually yes. South Wales Windscreens can bill some insurers directly (not all), so you may only pay your glass excess – how much depends on your own policy. Call 07769 707501 with your insurer’s name and policy details before any work starts and we’ll check. Read more on our insurance claims page.
Will a windscreen claim affect my no-claims bonus?
With many policies a glass-only claim doesn’t affect your no-claims discount, but your insurer decides this, not us. Check your policy wording or ask your insurer before you claim.
Can you bill my insurance company directly?
We can bill some insurers directly, but not all. Call us on 07769 707501 with your policy details and we’ll check before any work starts.
Do you calibrate ADAS cameras after a windscreen replacement?
No, we don’t carry out ADAS calibration, in-house or through a partner. ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) covers features such as lane-keeping assist and automatic emergency braking, and many of them use a camera mounted behind the windscreen. Carmakers often require that camera to be recalibrated after a windscreen replacement. If your car has these features, please check what it needs with your dealer or a calibration specialist.
How long does a windscreen repair or replacement take?
A chip repair typically takes around 20 minutes. A windscreen replacement is usually under an hour. We can usually carry out the job within 24 hours of you accepting the quote, subject to stock.
When can I drive my car after a windscreen replacement?
You can drive away about an hour after fitting. That gives the adhesive time to set so the new windscreen is held securely.
Do you come to me?
Yes. We are a fully mobile service. We come to your home, your workplace or another convenient place where the car is parked, anywhere in all CF and NP postcodes, plus Swansea & Neath (SA1–SA12) and Brecon (LD3). For a replacement we need enough room to open the front doors and work around the windscreen, so tell us what the parking is like when you book.
How far do you travel, and is there a call-out fee?
South Wales Windscreens is based in Sully, near Penarth, and covers all CF and NP postcodes plus Swansea & Neath (SA1–SA12) and Brecon (LD3), with no call-out charge and no extra travel charge. That includes Cardiff, Penarth, Barry, the Vale of Glamorgan, Bridgend, Pontypridd, Caerphilly, Merthyr Tydfil, Newport, Cwmbran, Swansea, Neath, Port Talbot (SA12) and Brecon. We don’t cover SA13 and above, or LD postcodes other than LD3 – but give us a call and we’ll see what we can do. You can check your postcode on our areas we cover page.
What do you need from me for a quote?
For a quote we need your vehicle registration, where the damage is (windscreen, which side window or the rear screen), a photo of the damage if you can, the postcode where the car will be, and your insurer’s name if you want to claim. Send it on WhatsApp to 07769 707501 or use the quote form.
Can side windows and rear screens be repaired?
No. Side windows and rear screens are made of toughened glass, which shatters into small pieces instead of chipping, so they have to be replaced. We replace car side windows, quarter glass and rear screens, and van rear door glass and sliding door glass. See side and rear glass replacement.
What are your opening hours?
South Wales Windscreens is open Monday to Friday 8am–8pm, and Saturday and Sunday 8am–5pm. Call or WhatsApp 07769 707501 during those hours. As a mobile service, we book jobs at your home or workplace within these times.
Is your work guaranteed?
Yes. All of our work comes with our 12-month guarantee covering any fitting issues, such as stress cracks or leaks. If you think there’s a problem with our fitting, call us on 07769 707501. See our guarantee for how it works.
How much does a windscreen replacement cost?
South Wales Windscreens quotes each job individually and doesn’t publish a price list, because the price depends on your vehicle and its glass, such as heated screens, rain sensors or camera brackets. Send your registration and a photo on WhatsApp (07769 707501) for a free quote. There’s no call-out charge, and if you have glass cover you may only pay your excess – how much depends on your own policy. See our windscreen cost guide.
How much will my excess be?
Your excess depends on your own policy, so check your documents or ask your insurer. We can’t tell you your excess, but we can check whether we can bill your insurer directly.
Do you provide VAT invoices or business accounts?
Yes. We provide VAT invoices, and we can set fleet customers up on account. Call us on 07769 707501 to talk about how you’d like jobs booked and invoiced. See van windscreen replacement.
What payment methods do you take?
We take all major payment methods, including Payment Assist. If you’re claiming on insurance, call us with your policy details first so we can check whether we can bill your insurer directly.
Are you approved by my insurer?
Insurers each have their own arrangements, so we can’t give a blanket answer. We can bill some insurers directly. Call us with your policy details and we’ll check yours before any work starts.
Can I drive with a chipped windscreen?
A small chip outside the driver’s line of sight doesn’t usually stop you driving, but it can spread into a crack with temperature changes and road vibration, and then the windscreen has to be replaced. Chips up to the size of a £1 coin can usually be repaired, typically in around 20 minutes, so get it looked at quickly. Damage in front of the driver can fail an MOT. See our cracked windscreen and MOT guide.
How quickly can you come out?
We can usually carry out the job within 24 hours of you accepting the quote, subject to stock, within our hours: Monday to Friday 8am–8pm, Saturday and Sunday 8am–5pm.
Do you cover Swansea and Neath?
Yes. South Wales Windscreens covers the SA1 to SA12 postcode districts, including Swansea, Mumbles, Gorseinon, Neath and the SA12 part of Port Talbot, with no call-out charge. We don’t cover SA13 or higher. See windscreen repair in Swansea and Neath.
Do you cover Llanelli or Carmarthen?
Llanelli and Carmarthen (SA14 and above) are outside our normal area, as is SA13. We cover SA1–SA12 only, but call 07769 707501 and we’ll tell you honestly whether we can help.
Do you replace van windscreens?
Yes. South Wales Windscreens replaces van windscreens, side windows, rear door glass and sliding door glass at your home, yard or workplace, so the van spends as little time off the road as possible. See van windscreen replacement.
Do you fit glass on motorhomes?
We can fit glass on some motorhomes. Call us with the make and model to check. We can’t fit every motorhome, so please check with us before booking. For vans, see van windscreen replacement.
What glass do you use?
South Wales Windscreens fits OEM-certified glass, fitted to the vehicle manufacturer’s guidelines. We use your registration to make sure the new glass matches your vehicle’s specification, including any heating elements, sensors or camera brackets.
Who runs South Wales Windscreens, and who will fit my windscreen?
We’re a family-run business. David Usher has been fitting windscreens since 2007, and the business became a limited company, South Wales Windscreens Limited (company number 16348254), in 2025. Our technicians are NVQ-qualified and fully insured.
Are you connected with other companies of a similar name?
No. South Wales Windscreens Ltd (company no. 16348254, run by David Usher) is not connected with The Windscreen Guys, the 'UK Windscreens Penarth' listing, or the dissolved company of the same name (06000474). Our phone number is 07769 707501.
