Smashed car window after a break-in
Coming back to a smashed window is horrible. Call or WhatsApp us with your registration and which window is broken, and we’ll come to you and replace it.
If your car or van window has been smashed in a break-in, South Wales Windscreens can replace it at your home or workplace anywhere in our South Wales area, with no call-out charge. We carry a large stock of side and rear glass and can usually do the job within 24 hours of you accepting the quote, subject to stock. Side windows can’t be repaired, because toughened glass shatters when it breaks.
What to do first
- Stay safe. Don’t touch the broken glass with bare hands.
- Report it to the police. You can call 101 or report online. If you’re claiming on insurance, you may need a crime reference number.
- Take photos of the damage and anything that’s been taken.
- Remove any valuables left in the car.
- Cover the gap if rain is on the way – a plastic sheet taped to the door frame (not the paintwork) helps keep the inside dry until we arrive.
- Call or WhatsApp us on 07769 707501 with the registration and which window is broken. A photo helps.
Which windows we replace
- Front and rear door glass, driver or passenger side
- Front and rear quarter glass
- Heated rear screens
- Van rear door glass and sliding door glass – see van windscreen replacement
We can fit glass on some motorhomes. Call us with the make and model to check. We don’t work on HGVs.
Clearing up the glass
We clear loose glass where we can reach it; some door cards are sealed, so it isn’t always possible.
How quickly we can come
We can usually carry out the job within 24 hours of you accepting the quote, subject to stock. We carry a large stock of side and rear glass, and if your panel needs ordering, we’ll tell you when we quote. We’re open Monday to Friday 8am–8pm and Saturday and Sunday 8am–5pm.
Claiming on insurance
If your policy includes glass cover, you may be able to claim. We can bill some insurers directly, though not all, so call us with your policy details before work starts and we’ll check. Your excess depends on your own policy, so check your documents or ask your insurer. You may need a crime reference number. More on how insurance claims work.
Paying yourself
If you’d rather not claim, we take all major payment methods, including Payment Assist. Ask for a free quote and we’ll give you the price before we start. VAT invoices are available for business vehicles.
Our guarantee
All of our work comes with our 12-month guarantee covering any fitting issues, such as stress cracks or leaks. See how our guarantee works.
Break-in questions
Can a smashed side window be repaired?
No. Side and rear car windows are made of toughened glass, which shatters into small pieces when it breaks, so it has to be replaced. Only laminated windscreens can have chips repaired.

Do you replace van windows after a break-in?
Yes. We replace van rear door glass and sliding door glass, as well as van windscreens, at your yard, site or home.
Is it safe to drive with a smashed side window?
It’s best not to if you can avoid it. Loose glass, wind noise and an open car are all risks. If you have to move the car, clear loose glass from the seat first and keep your speed down.
