The £1 coin rule

Hold a £1 coin over the chip. Chips up to the size of a £1 coin can usually be repaired. If it’s larger, or a crack has started to run from it, the windscreen will need replacing. We’ll also check where the chip is: damage right in front of the driver or close to the edge of the screen may need a replacement too.

Why Cardiff chips spread

A chip breaks the outer layer of glass. Vibration on the city’s roads, potholes, speed bumps and the temperature change when you use the heater on a cold morning can all turn it into a crack. Once that happens it can’t be repaired. Booking a repair quickly is the cheapest way to keep your windscreen.

Chips and the MOT

Damage bigger than 10mm in the area directly in front of the driver, or bigger than 40mm elsewhere in the area the wipers sweep, can fail the MOT (GOV.UK MOT inspection manual, section 3.2). Repairing a small chip early helps you stay within the limits – see our cracked windscreen and MOT guide.

What a repair involves

We clean the chip, draw out the air and inject a clear resin that sets hard. The repair restores strength, stops the chip spreading and usually leaves only a faint mark. See windscreen chip repair for the full process.
